Badland’s National Park: Welcome to South Dakotas wild wonderland.

Wildlife encounters.

The wildlife here steals the show. Buffalo majestically roam the grasslands. They look peaceful but they can be dangerous so keep your distance. Prairie dogs chirp and scurry in busy towns. You never get tired of watching them-they’re adorable. Coyotes howl chillingly at dusk, echoing across the canyons. If you’re lucky you will see a few bighorn sheep. If you want to stay overnight, the park has great camping. Cedar Pass Campground has great views and offers easy access. Try Sage Creek Campground if you want a more rustic feel. Be careful not to wake the nearby bison. Both spots have stargazing and serenity in abundance. There’s something magical about sleeping in The Badlands National Park. The silence is ancient and soothing.

The Native American connection.

Tips for visiting.

Its hot and dry so bring a lot of water. Wear a wide-brimmed hat and apply sunscreen. Visit early morning or late afternoon for cooler temperatures. You can get maps and tips at the Ben Reifil Visitor Center. Keep plenty of gas in your tank-they’re aren’t many stations out here. Stay on marked trails and respect wildlife. Don’t forget your camera because you might have to prove this place is real.

There is plenty more to do nearby. For quirky souvenirs and free ice water, go to Wall Drug. Explore Minutemen Missile National Historic Site if you want to know cold war history.
